Referring my child for School Counseling

School counseling is usually short-term in nature and most often play-based.  Referrals for individual counseling are usually made from a child’s teacher, directly from the parent, and/or sometimes based on my own observations, and always with parent permission.  Our counseling program also offers small group counseling.  Referrals are similar to individual counseling though the nature of the groups tends to focus on specific topics or problems that several children all share.  This forum is especially helpful for children who might be feeling that they are alone in dealing with an issue.

Parent check in with Mrs. Cordia

I am always available by email at kcordia@u32.org and you can always leave a confidential voice mail for me on my line at school. Often I make time at the beginning of the day or right at the end of the day to meet as well but if you want to be sure to meet in person just email or call ahead. I'm at EMES (223-7936 x303) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Guidance Class

Classroom guidance is an integral part of the program being offered at Calais Elementary.  Teaching guidance in the classroom gives the school counselor the unique opportunity to meet and get to know all the children in the school rather than a select few.  This allows for a proactive approach to dealing with common problems all children face.  The curriculum we use to ensure that lessons are comprehensive and developmentally appropriate is Kelso's Choice guidance curriculum.  The topics for this age include social cognition, personal safety, problem solving, stress management and self esteem building.  In addition to Kelso's Choice, we pull from other resources like Puberty: The Wonder Years, Social Thinking, and Care for Kids.

Information on Consent and Confidentiality

School Counseling is considered a resource that all students should have access to in public education. The counseling is enhanced by communication and support between home and school.
